Kevin Botello

Boulder High, Class of 2024 | Colorado School of Mines

Many people leave home to go to another country in pursuit of a better future, but not many do so at the age of 15 with no adult support. Kevin Botello’s journey is a testament to his determination and resilience. Born in Boulder, Colorado, Kevin is the second of three children. His parents immigrated from Mexico City, sacrificing much to give their children the advantages of being Americans.

When Kevin was eight, his mother was diagnosed with cancer. Seeking medical care and family support, his parents decided to move the family back to Mexico. As a child, Kevin didn’t fully understand the gravity of the situation, but he adapted quickly to his new environment. He met his mother’s family, navigated unfamiliar places, and started at a new school. The school system in Mexico was more advanced and the teachers were stricter, but Kevin understood that education was his path to success.

At 15, Kevin faced a pivotal decision. His father suggested returning to the U.S. to continue his education, as it was common in Mexico to not pursue studies beyond high school due to a lack of resources. The decision was Kevin’s to make. Motivated by his aspirations for a better life and the sacrifices his parents had made, he chose to return to the U.S. His father warned him of the challenges ahead, emphasizing the importance of staying focused on his studies despite potential distractions like friends, parties, and the allure of making money.

Kevin’s parents instilled in him a love for learning and the belief that education was the key to a successful future. This guidance led Kevin to set his sights on higher education in the U.S. Now, as he looks forward to the next phase of his academic journey, Kevin is thrilled to be heading to Colorado School of Mines. He will be majoring in engineering and playing soccer for the university. The prospect of exploring all aspects of the college’s academic landscape and being part of an active community is incredibly motivating to him. Kevin aims to explore many topics while working towards his goal of becoming a civil engineer.

Kevin’s journey has been filled with challenges, but his determination has never wavered. He has worked hard to balance his academics and responsibilities, always keeping his goal of making his family proud in mind. Kevin’s story is one of perseverance, hope, and the relentless pursuit of a better future.
